For a year now, I have a ranger companion, a Dunadan boy who from time to time travels with me to the wilderness or patrols the Breeland. I try to teach him stealth, archery and track - lore and also the love of smoke on the food you eat, moss on huge boulders,dramatic landscape and free air. We cook and eat and play and walk and sleep in shrubs and woods. I am very thankfull for this little warrior and i hope we will travel many more miles</div>

Beorningas?Here is a short account of the work that draws from one specific fictional culture from Middle Earth. The followers of Beorn, people of the Anduin vales, kin to Woodmen and Bardings and enemies of Shadow. From what i know about Tolkiens cosmology, these people represent ancestors to ancient Europeans in a sense that Middle Earth is fictional mythology.<br />
I love Beorn character in a book and i like his ability to change into a wild beast, to me its very reminiscent of Tiermensch idea of old germanic art. I wanted beorning culture to visualy resemble old germanic art, but without actual citation. Here are examples and you may judge how i succeeded.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrR8ay1KM-pUCDKwDN4ulHe8wJYCHaFmTEumySoyEslrlxO0ehtFFxBix37p3qvbt8_Rn6lJ1qlOsQMbOBBjaHsb8xbgwWitendYgOuxOV7dT83RSowte2CQXaM-uNezGBIjKLgqSQ00w/s1600/rav.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrR8ay1KM-pUCDKwDN4ulHe8wJYCHaFmTEumySoyEslrlxO0ehtFFxBix37p3qvbt8_Rn6lJ1qlOsQMbOBBjaHsb8xbgwWitendYgOuxOV7dT83RSowte2CQXaM-uNezGBIjKLgqSQ00w/s1600/rav.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a>My friend and returning customer approached me and honored me with an opportunity to design his first inks. It was a great honout but also quite a responsibility, as it would be hard to imagine more personal art than this. His life story is strongly connected with Raven, so i went for this theme for one of his forearms. I was inspired by a ringerike style ravens and added some "viking baroque" to reflect the more organic technique and material than metal, stone and occasional wood or antler examples that survive to our days in decaying soil. We originaly thought about having two of them, slightly varying, but finaly the decision has been made to go with just one raven.<br />
The other motive was much trickier to conceive, draw and it will be much harder to explain. But let me try this. Its a known fact, that J.R.R. Tolkien set his Middle earth in our world, not a distant planet or paralel universe. It was made, basicaly as our ancient meta history. I usualy invent my own art styles i use for Middle Earth artifacts, but when my friend suggested ME theme for the other hand, i was at unrest, because i as a style purist didnt feel its ok to have a viking style on one hand and fantasy on other (that weird i am!!). So while driving a long distance from Norway home, i found out the solution, that lays in the fact that Middle earth is our world. What if the <i>svartalfar</i> of the norse sagas are the descendands of Durins folk? And what if they preserved the stories of old? And is it too much to suppose that the dwarvish smiths were those, who inspired the germanic craftsmen? So i went and re-invented a ringerike style in slightly twisted way. added some elements, exagerated on others... So without moch more gibberish, i am presenting you a long gone tale of Trór, the king of the mountain and Smaug the firedrake. Note the ravens on the mustache - ancestors of Roac, and the Arkenstone as a crown above mountain kings head.<br />

In my work that draws from my creativity and not from my knowledge of historical styles i tend to create visual language that represents the culture i am creating or illustrating. I think that ad-hoc item, created just from thin air seldom work well.<br />
Most of my fantasy work draws its inspiration from Tolkiens Middle Earth, so i will ilustrate on that.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Here is some work i did from the culture around the town of Dale</h3>

<br />
the knife above is in Dalian style, its based on germanic animal style but apparently its obsessed with dragon. I did used germanic influence because Tolkien made Dale very Norse like. The idea is that its the EARLIER version of germanic styles so its very simple and has a very linear character<br />

This is the first piece i made in the style and its not so developed in systematic way but you can already see some distinctive features - a bone inlay in wood, a linear depiction of dragon, engraved blade and sheet metal ferrules.</div>

In the honour of Beorn</h3>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
i had a hard time inventing how to portray Beorning culture, until i saw work of scottish painter Jon Hodgson. Some details on his work gave me an idea to use stylised animals and spirals as an ornamental element. Now i am pretty much at home around Carrock</div>

It was great opportunity to learn to work in one specific tradition and also explore variations in blades and techniques. This period of history shows both stunning artistic coherrence and technical variability. Lets see the pieces!<div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The firts one is Vendel period short sax, blade is forgewelded of carbon steel and wrought iron. The body of the blade is inscribed with two grooves filled with stamped circlets. There is also inlayed rondel in silver. The handle is old ash with inset antler decorative strips. Fittings are fabricated brass. Sax sits in the scabbard made of wood, covered in leather and mounted with brass. Two decorative panels are made using pressblech technique</td></tr>

One particular motive seems to be attractive to me very strongly and thats the reason i wanted to look more into it. Its the wildman face, the fierce face or mask. I am not sure how it started, maybe as an inspiration from roman coins and medals germanic wariors were seeing in contact and service of Roman army. Sure thing is that you can see those en face portraits early on in oldest germanc styles. What interests me the most is the merging of the face to fit the environment and style of the entire piece. Bellow you can see the head plate of bow brooch in Nydam style. The head between those two beasts is very reminiscent of roman heads but you can also see how later Style I saucer and button brooches developed from that.<br />

Next one is the example of fully developed Style II art on Ultuna boat burial spatha scabbard. While the Sytle II is very international one and spreads over the germanic dominated Europe, incorporating en face masks seems to be very scandinavian fashion. While i deeply enjoy my historical based work, i must say that being allowed to express myself in free form of illustrative bladesmithing is great joy. We often strive to make legendary blades from myth and stories, but i find everyday items very attractive.<br />
<br />
So here is Rangers set, packed to the way to unknown<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
and Myles wrote excelent poem for me again:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
Into the wilderness</h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Few nights have found me</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
by the fire in a hall,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
a cup in my hand</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and kinsmen nearby.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Far have I fared</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
through forests unknown</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
where sleep comes uneasy</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
as I stare in the dark.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Will I wake to the bite</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
of some beast in the night?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Or the calling of crows</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
on the cool morning air,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and dawn's bright glow</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
driving my fear?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I must trust my fate</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
to my fire and cover,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and when I wake</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will wander again</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
into the unknown,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
into the wilderness.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had the most inspiring opportunity to attend the invitational hammerin in Alaska, hosted by Dave Stephens, Shane Harvey and Van Clifton. This years goal was to create an artifact as a collaboration of seven smith from around the globe. The quality of company was humbling and overwhelming - Owen Bush (UK), Jake Powning (Ca), Peter Johnsson (Sweden), J. A. Loose, Michael Pikula, and Dave Stephens (USA) and me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Long time before the planes took us to Anchorage we decided on design and process. I was wondering how this cat herding experience will go, but everything went smooth in that aspect. I think its because the great respect we feel towards each other as maker and personality.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When we arrived we built the smelter from sand, clay, manure and hay and started a smelt. Owen was responsible for smelting material for our blade and it was great learning experience to watch him work. Calm, proffessional and pleasant approach. Also, big succes of bloom, steel, very compact and nice to forge.</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Then the blade team consisting of Owen, Dave and Michael processed the bloom and forged a blade and also one backup blade from modern materials. The was one set back that made us to forge in wee hours but you will see that that bloom blade survived and shines in glory.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, hilt team (me and Jake) started to work on handle components and also on fittings for scabbard. Jake carved the waxes for guards, ferrules and peen block, i carved the antler parts. Bellow you can see the scabbard slider i carved with almandines and moonstone set in silver bezels by Yul.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0GBKTFLXvBWO16lCjeLhbSVhYy23PKPyMlM0moETKbpGIx3hQKmd6PrLy-4y9NRtpQCLGYIGoRn6av1ytmvbWD84JSDpUqJ1R6ijDLDksfCNErc-cNRAex2o_dtRl4e-gwynB1oqVizc/s1600/DSC_8146.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0GBKTFLXvBWO16lCjeLhbSVhYy23PKPyMlM0moETKbpGIx3hQKmd6PrLy-4y9NRtpQCLGYIGoRn6av1ytmvbWD84JSDpUqJ1R6ijDLDksfCNErc-cNRAex2o_dtRl4e-gwynB1oqVizc/s640/DSC_8146.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Unfortunately casting went bit south, but fortunately, the parts that survived were just enough to go with one of previous design options. We agreed later that it might even been beneficial for the outcome. So i had to carve another two bits, central ring bead for grip and vesica shaped pommel. Yul set stones in both of these pieces.<br />In this time, Peter Johnsson, who was also supervising all project had his venier scabbard glued, shaped, lined with felt and covered with leather. The assembly part was about to be done.<br />Here you can see blade mounted with hilt and slider for scabbard.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZssDUEm-j__zJ5uaDRVVU2umxftfwd9tcgTufqEg0REim1aTDe5mPl1p0Ak9EdTUz3hTLc1pjo2PdSjjkdHmdoTshb5wrGT9g1G_HcxdhBXLPRlUrOZ6t90lpIjdvtIXuwxjQErTqDTY/s1600/DSC_8155.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZssDUEm-j__zJ5uaDRVVU2umxftfwd9tcgTufqEg0REim1aTDe5mPl1p0Ak9EdTUz3hTLc1pjo2PdSjjkdHmdoTshb5wrGT9g1G_HcxdhBXLPRlUrOZ6t90lpIjdvtIXuwxjQErTqDTY/s640/DSC_8155.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

I have to say i learned a lot from all artisans who were there. Even if it may not look so between all laughter and pranks, i had a very spiritual experience. I am sure my work will be better now. I am happy that i had opportunity to contribute with my skill and aesthetics in something that is much more than sum of all partsgullinburstihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12925585024339856860noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9054844353665076230.post-88938819027346314742013-04-09T13:47:00.000-07:002013-04-09T13:51:04.654-07:00Head opener<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Or Haufuthupnari in Old Norse is my newest creation. A single edged sword with H type pommel ornamented in Borre style. I dont want to write here about how and from which materials i created the sword, i would more like to write about the spirit of the piece.<br />
Sword is powerful statement. Its of course a weapon, tool of grim trade but its also a symbol, a beginning of a story or a hero of one. With this one, i wanted to make a true companion, something trustworthy, what is not embelished or ornamented because you want to show of, but as a representation of the relationship of the warrior and his sword. Is it something he was given by his lord as reward? Did he win it in a fight? did it passed from father to son? This is where i aimed, not the stark military sword for interchangeable soldier, not a high class weapon of Jarl made to order after the latest fashion. Somewhere in between, where you fight but still come home and plough your land and brew your beer.<br />
<br />
The name represents not only the obvious physiological meaning but also a learning experience for me.<br />
<br />
Myles came up gain with great story in this poem<br />

Its a Dwarven mourning ring, made to commemorate fallen friends and heroes in fierce battles with orcs and dragons. Unlike most of Dwarven made stuff, its made out of organic material - in this case a troll tooth. I think it represents the fact that the forge and furnace are off and without the living flame.<br />Have the most beautiful spring time and await a new post soongullinburstihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12925585024339856860noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9054844353665076230.post-65344670775112924462012-12-12T09:17:00.001-08:002012-12-12T09:17:38.628-08:00Fiddle in TrewhiddleAs i wrote before, i really love to work within the boundaries of old art styles, mainly those of our germanic ancestors, i must alsoadmit that i find a strange pleasure to explore those styles which are a bit less popular then notorious Jelling and Urnes style. There was already a post about the Salin I and II styles, this time i would like to write a little more about my work in Trewhiddle style.<br />
The style is named by a hoard of silver objects found in Cornwall and its a native style of Britain of 9th century. The main body of works in this style is engraved silver with lines filed with niello. I believe that after the previous styles, displaying bold lines in glittering gold, it had to have a intricate and delicate impact on the wiever. The efect is in fact almost tender.<br />
<br />
The technique the artist used in antiqity to lay out the design is somewhat you dont see often on todays inspired works. Todays artist and craftsmen just copy a motive and use it on a surface where they think it might fit. Its indeed possible in most styles, but its not easy in any of them. Trewhiddle as many other styles used panneling of the surface of the object, in my opinion to avoid the problem with tying the design over the endless surfaces of cylindrical objects or large spaces of round brooches. In those pannels wee animals were squeezed, legs and wings foldes around fragile bodies.<br />
<br />
<br />
Here is an example of the seax pommel in the style i made some weeks ago<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hello! Long time no post, but not because i had not anything to say! On the contrary, i have several ideas in my mind, so probably there will be a more frequent posting. This post will be unusual a bit, because it features not only my work, but also work of other amazing art and craft folk.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In past few years i develepod desire to fill my daily life with handmade object, instead of machine made ones. It came from the deep love of items made by actual people. To be able to observe the print of their personalities in the object. Its the way how i can communicate with other creative beings, even when i am alone. I want to introduce you to my daily companions and their makers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First picture shows a pocket knife i made for myself from end of the seax billet and pieces of scrap, but in the front you can see my most recent addittion - corkscrew by my friend and amazing maker Jeff Helmes. The handle is also a case where you can screw the screw in :-)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here is my cutlery i use whenever i can. A soup bowl and coffee mug made by Mr. Sršeň here in Czech republic. What i love about those, is the fact that these splashes of black are in fact pieces of iron melted into the surface. Also there is a salt shaker i made some weeks ago and foldable tablespoon mady by my friend Hloh. The teaspoon is made partialy by me and by Hloh again. Its a socket construction<br />

These days its good to stay warm, so i have these fingerless gloves and wollen cap, made by my lovely wife in naalbiding technique. The blues scarf is present from Mrs. Longmire, a wife of my great Tennessee smith friend.</div>

You can realize the quality of handmade object in every step, quite literaly in these boots made by my friend from six years old Benjamin Hrubeš. The toggle is mady from horse hoof, which i found lovely appropriate. Shoes are pictured together with a belt he also made for me, featuring the antler carved bucke i made for the project.</div>

<br />
Last but not least, here is a sketchbook, handbound and painted by my amazing artist friend Hela Rosova. I hope that spirit of her work will help me drawing the ideas for new work.<br />

These were just some of my daily companions, everyday using of objects made by hands of individual person, with the love and understanding of the craft has unspoken warmth, which can be hardly provided by stuff stamped in one of Sarumans machines.<br />

IThe idea came to me while polishing a handle of a knife for another project, as this operation usualy consumes a tiny bit of brain capacity, i am allowing my imagination to go free.<br />
I was tempted for a long time to make another Tolkien inspired piece, most likely Rohan. I also like to make spears, and finaly i am tempted to make a dragonslaying weapon. It melted to an idea to create the grave goods of Rohan hero Fram, son of Frumgar, who slayed the great dragon Scatha.<br />
Here is the first picture od what grave furniture might look like<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPumrZshBqw8KOJr5eO0Ujg8VrNict0IiURXSMSZtcIfuGYo3t9jFFl-Gj1yRAdzVbxB3DsduSedERlhjtdLbNUHZcn5MjHevF3B8STsvPmGyBFcfOCirqG6ytbMICPTzx9rFyjq_U6z8/s1600/DSC04572.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPumrZshBqw8KOJr5eO0Ujg8VrNict0IiURXSMSZtcIfuGYo3t9jFFl-Gj1yRAdzVbxB3DsduSedERlhjtdLbNUHZcn5MjHevF3B8STsvPmGyBFcfOCirqG6ytbMICPTzx9rFyjq_U6z8/s1600/DSC04572.jpg" height="224" width="640" /></a></div>
i want to make few more fibulas, a blowing horn and maybe a cremation urn. These goods are supposed to be kept in Meduseld treasury.<br />This will be a long term project which might even fail during the journey, because i will try to scrap some time to work on this, unless some of you, gentle reades, wants to commission this and be a proud owner of genuine artwork, dedicated to a forgoten hero<br />
I already started with a small item, a tunic fastening brass brooch. As you can see, i am about to invent (or as Tolkien would say re-invent) the style which will fit Rohan way of life. I will faithfuly base this on anglosaxon material culture, because i think it fits and i think mister Tolkien would approve.<br />

Here is the other one from those two i wrote about. Much more complex piece and i believe one of my better works. It represents my idea of war knife of mighty warlord from 6th century Sweden. The owner would surely belong to a local aristocracy, because the knife is pretty richly ornamented, and because it bears motives in Salin II animal style, which is believed to be a style of ruling class.</div>

I also went for slightly aged look to emphasize germanic fascination with old and proven. The weapon, same as friend is best tested by the tooth of time and storm of the battle.</div>

Its very interesting that while the blades are pretty plain in this time on seaxes, the sheaths are often more laborous then the weapon itself. so i tried to go for this look too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In next few days the Eagle feather will travel to its new homestead, leaving me a bit sad for its leaving but rich for the experience earned in working on this and the shalow but valuable insight in the world of germanic aristocracy of Vendel period sweden</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course, Myles did great job on poem on this one, so by reading it (do it aloud, its the way these are meant to be read) it will stay with me till the end of my time.</div>

Shivering birches<br />

He came with the idea of old pagan saxon spears with interesting profiles. While these profiles itself are very striking visualy and very interestin deviation from the norm, I immediatly started to think how this will look done in wrought iron, where you can literaly see how the hammer formed red hot metal. The strings of materials follow the lead of the smiths hand and tell the story of its birth.<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span">The spearhead is of the type used in early saxon England, it has fullered blade, split open socket, which is bound with a bronze binding ring, bearing ornamentation in Salin I animal style. In this case, beastman is crawling around the socket circumference </span><span class="Apple-style-span">.</span><br />
The spear head is also a part of bladesmithing narrative project I collaborate on with great poet Myles Mulkey. He had realy hit the right feeling with this one.<br />
It speaks about times when the safe world was ending at the willage fence, where the fire lit meadhall was symbolising ancestry, pride, continuity and safety. And if you happened to face the unknown horrors of outer world, to watch for danger and protect your folk, you would love to have an ashen shaft to grasp and a cloud grey spearhead bound with the ring, as you are bound to your lord<br />

First one is Swedish styled seax, with 35 cm long blade, welded from ancient stringy iron and steel edge. I am just making the hilt for this one - quite complex work with sheet brass fittings and wooden carved handle in Salin II style<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimDnJgMGYwKzzbAPTXAtz6EvjYON6KYvn_RKufKFRGrDdspT0Xqlo0RlEMq8d6RLKQZvpFOr9HXk-GBruMxCCO5ZTORByj24WR2X4Oz8L3r1wDZ7fmZZNmQ5-AlRyTXr-hKHN0PtY1xYo/s1600/DSC04487.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimDnJgMGYwKzzbAPTXAtz6EvjYON6KYvn_RKufKFRGrDdspT0Xqlo0RlEMq8d6RLKQZvpFOr9HXk-GBruMxCCO5ZTORByj24WR2X4Oz8L3r1wDZ7fmZZNmQ5-AlRyTXr-hKHN0PtY1xYo/s640/DSC04487.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
the style of the fittings and actually overall style of the seax is hugely inspired by a seax from Bjars in Sweden.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh67av4L_KiL747FJqmNaaT9GymoTnJlbgt83JuyzvoTjT2Z0gwaMnQtIcWror_9ZRYNPiQ8DohUOxn47TT_JvlywJPmE0EryXGhtF0dACnb7C3HuuQyWNK_POY6eVQUNqEkRUDBQ7UI78/s1600/DSC04488.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh67av4L_KiL747FJqmNaaT9GymoTnJlbgt83JuyzvoTjT2Z0gwaMnQtIcWror_9ZRYNPiQ8DohUOxn47TT_JvlywJPmE0EryXGhtF0dACnb7C3HuuQyWNK_POY6eVQUNqEkRUDBQ7UI78/s640/DSC04488.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There is a lot of work ahead on this one, making upper bolster and pommel, and carving the handle. But for those seaxes, sheaths were often much more ornamented the entire seax.<br />
<br />
Second piece is very interesting saxon spear, also from 6th century. It has two unusual features - the split socket which will be terminating in bronze Salin I style ring with Tiermensch motive, and the blade which is very strangely corrugated, it has depression on left side on both faces of the blade. The cross section is therefore of the S rune shape.<br />
The spear is forged from very same piece of wrought iron i used for the spine of previous seax. It was very usual not to have any steel in spear heads in this period<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYG3gRAXHXjl1xPiGoJYTrxKa_1Mo6Yxawg8ysN0T5Uhk9mYHTJmYuG8crHirLNqFEsY-j73fTDLRV_Ll7xcpfMYieBpcAs2y3v0Wl8OVYXJ_dw4VLVgB1Tf1BOg-8vsioq05G5SWOevQ/s1600/DSC04492.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYG3gRAXHXjl1xPiGoJYTrxKa_1Mo6Yxawg8ysN0T5Uhk9mYHTJmYuG8crHirLNqFEsY-j73fTDLRV_Ll7xcpfMYieBpcAs2y3v0Wl8OVYXJ_dw4VLVgB1Tf1BOg-8vsioq05G5SWOevQ/s640/DSC04492.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I hope i can make Myles to write poems to one or both of them :-)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC1ye8R04fx-CBqpRf0g_wWHx5iJiog2TcqIsbISlp8wVdVigSB55XMsg1RglvhUhd_6kkEnuBwk8BtEK-7dsccvt32EgMyLohqgusWBw_WPwddI-c21BxO3MlqHAKCGr_K6nebhF2j2o/s1600/DSC04294.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC1ye8R04fx-CBqpRf0g_wWHx5iJiog2TcqIsbISlp8wVdVigSB55XMsg1RglvhUhd_6kkEnuBwk8BtEK-7dsccvt32EgMyLohqgusWBw_WPwddI-c21BxO3MlqHAKCGr_K6nebhF2j2o/s640/DSC04294.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i found myslef digging deeper in time for splendid material of Migration Period and Vendel time.<br />
Most of my current works are in Sallin type II style. Very elegant flowy but also very dense and sometimes crowded.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDHDXUQoZuG352Cn5K_5Vdqi1CysvBQEreYE5iIBQES1Qfvy5u-G-mTnb6M4TUDBaDReCx8rHOIsZFH_6p7Or4cfCF7-HiYnN5NMHfm4YvQheV9BvdgFH8_KKtaFYND-t9bF21ejCY0Eo/s1600/Vendal-12-d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDHDXUQoZuG352Cn5K_5Vdqi1CysvBQEreYE5iIBQES1Qfvy5u-G-mTnb6M4TUDBaDReCx8rHOIsZFH_6p7Or4cfCF7-HiYnN5NMHfm4YvQheV9BvdgFH8_KKtaFYND-t9bF21ejCY0Eo/s640/Vendal-12-d.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The distribution of those items embelished in this style - across all the Europe is stunning. It was in fact the style of Germanic ruling elite.<br />
Now i am working on the sax in this style, strongly inspired by a find in Bjars in Sweden. The blade is welded from ancient iron and the hilt and scabbard will be highly ornamented in Salin II style<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiwCexhH_RideGhxivwv_gyhj1RA66YLIlfo61IA99wHMM-tvdlOUZz14GWKmq1Q9-VqFXCuQeozxCoWjVYgBV1myeAxIAEeXnvensLzChD8d9HfOwUt5OPsfO6qmogrF2Vl9WYhuuLp4/s1600/DSC04469.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiwCexhH_RideGhxivwv_gyhj1RA66YLIlfo61IA99wHMM-tvdlOUZz14GWKmq1Q9-VqFXCuQeozxCoWjVYgBV1myeAxIAEeXnvensLzChD8d9HfOwUt5OPsfO6qmogrF2Vl9WYhuuLp4/s640/DSC04469.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is obviously scandinavian example, but because i find autumn to be very anglosaxon in the sense of mood, and because i am just reading excelent book by Stephen Pollington Wayland´s work, i hope i will manage to create anglo saxon 6th century spear with bronze ring in Salin I style very soon! So i dig even deeper...gullinburstihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12925585024339856860noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9054844353665076230.post-13600049398162737082012-10-02T04:17:00.000-07:002012-10-02T04:19:10.976-07:00Swordsmith and WordsmithEarlier this year, in summer, i was working on the stag hunting spear for a customer, my friend Myles Mulkey feeled inspired and wrote an awesome poem about it. It struck a long tuned string in me, so i asked Myles if he want to collaborate in a project, once again tieing spiritual and material culture of long gone ancestors.<br />
We made the deal, that when i will tink that some of my pieces is somehow worthy of getting poem about it, Myles would compose this poem.<br />
<br />
Here are pictures of 3 of our first 4 endeavours. Enjoy!<br />
<br />
This is the above mentioned spear with Patternwelded blade and bronze socket<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This one is tied to the line of knives i make, all with the wildboar motive. Their name is Hildiswin<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
